Summer League

Summer League

Due to the overwhelming support of our veteran players and the interest of dozens of new players, New Orleans Ultimate Summer League 2009 is expanding to the largest format we have ever experienced! Here is the vital info:

FIELD SITES:

With 8 teams this year, we have expanded to two sites in Uptown New Orleans: The Lyons Center, where we met on Monday, June 1st, will have two fields and host four teams each week. The additonal site is Harrell Stadium, located at the corner of Claiborne Ave. and Leonidas St. This site will have two fields and four teams as well.

Because this is a two-site format, it is incumbent on all players to check our website for information each week and for the captains to be constantly communicating with players. Each group of four teams will remain at their respective fields until they have played a 'round robin' over the course of 3 weeks. In week four, some teams will move in order to play everyone.

TIMES AND GAME FORMAT:

Games now begin at 6:30 pm and play continues until one team reaches 15 points or until dark (neither field has functioning lights at the moment). This will allow for a short half-time when a team reaches 8 points. There should be approximately 90 minutes of daylight for each game. All players are advised to get there before 6:30 pm to warm-up and talk with their captains. Play begins promptly at 6:30 pm.

SUMMER LEAGUE CHAMPION:

In another departure from our past methods, the Summer League Champion Trophy will anoint the team with the best season record. For the past 17 years, we have had an end of the season tournament that is often won by the team with the most available players on the day of the tourney, whether they be ringers or not.

TOURNAMENT:

We will still have a tournament on Saturday, August 8th, however it will be a Hat Tournament, where we will invite all players and friends to participate in this all day event. In a Hat Tournament format, all players must wear a hat at all times ( no cop out visors or bandanas - be creative) and the teams are randomly selected by pulling names from a hat. It is a good opportunity to meet some of the other players who you may have lined up against all season and find out what it is like to play WITH them for a change.

CHILD CARE:

We have added a necessary resource to Summer League for the aging generation: Babysitters for the little ones!

The league will share costs with intersted parents to pay for child care at the playgrounds located at each park where we play. Cost (to the parents) will be $5 per kid per night. Both Lyons and Harrell have new playground equipment in a gated area immediately adjacent to the fields.

POST-GAME PARTIES:

Be sure to come to our post-game parties at our sponsoring bars. We will be rotating bars this year, so please check the schedule. This is a great opportunity to relive the glory (or heartbreak) of the evening's games as well as a chance to get to know your teammates and pick the brains of the veteran players. In keeping with tradition of years past, the first $100 worth of draft beer (in pitchers) is free to league members.

Important Note: The post-game party starts at approximately 8:30 pm after the games. To ensure that everyone gets a fair shot at the free alcohol, the party doesn't start until the league commish arrives.
